February Masterclasses - MSA

Hello Musicians, Teachers, and Parents,

The Manitoba Strings Academy is excited to announce two masterclasses coming up in February. Some wonderful Canadian musicians are coming to Winnipeg so we are able to offer two in-person events to benefit from their expertise. Please add these dates to your calendar to hold the space. More information about each masterclass will be emailed soon.

Masterclass #1 (violin/viola): "Elissa Lee and Sheila Jaffe Masterclass"

Violin and viola musicians will each get a 30 min. time slot to perform and receive feedback from one of the clinicians.

It is highly recommended to bring your own pianist if your piece requires accompaniment. If you are playing a sonata, a pianist is required.

Time/Date: 10am-1:15pm, Feb. 25, 2023
Location: University of Winnipeg, Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall
Cost: $80 per student

Elissa Lee and Sheila Jaffee are two members from Ensemble Made in Canada.

Elissa Lee - Winner of the 23rd Eckhardt-Gramatté Strings Competition, Elissa Lee has appeared as a soloist with top orchestras across Canada. She has held positions as second concertmaster in both the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestraand the WDR Sinfonie Orchester. Now enjoying a busy freelance career, Elissa tours frequently the greatest concerts halls and festivals in Europe.

Sheila Jaffe - Canadian violinist and violist Sheila Jaffé is praised for her versatility and expression on the instrument. She is equally comfortable and compelling in recital, chamber music, and orchestral positions, and is committed to excellence in every capacity. She has performed across North America and Europe as a chamber musician, orchestral player and soloist. Very much in demand in chamber music circles, she has performed in numerous international festivals, including Domaine Forget in Quebec, IMS Prussia Cove in England, Toronto Summer Music and Ottawa Chamberfest.

Masterclass #2 (cello/chamber): "John Kadz Masterclass" (Co-sponsored by University of Manitoba)

Cello musicians will each get a 30 min. time slot to perform and receive feedback from the clinician.
Chamber groups will get a 60 min. time slot to perform and receive feedback from the clinician.

It is highly recommended to bring your own pianist if your piece requires accompaniment. If you are playing a sonata, a pianist is required.

Time/Date: 10am-12pm OR 1:30-4:30pm*, Feb. 12, 2023
Location: University of Manitoba
Cost: $80 for solo performance, $45 per musician for chamber performance
*Musicians will be asked to attend either the morning or the afternoon session

John Kadz - John Kadz’s career as chamber musician and teacher spans more than 55 years and includes extensive touring throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. As a member of the One Third Ninth piano trio, Mr. Kadz performed hundreds of concerts in many of the world’s finest venues, as well as doing extensive grass roots work to develop and promote chamber music in western Canada.
